City and Guilds Level 2 Award
What will I study?
The qualification is designed to investigate how land is utilised in the UK e.g. food and energy production, forestry, leisure use, housing and the rural and urban infrastructure.
As part of the course you will investigate the changing use of land over time and look at the advancement of technology within the wider land based industries. There will be the opportunity to develop your plant and animal husbandry skills.
You will develop knowledge, understand and skills related to the different uses of land and associated industries, challenges and conflicts that arise when land is used for food production, leisure and conservation.
How will I be assessed?
Coursework - an externally set, internally marked and externally moderated assessment, that is based on a series of practical and real-world scenarios that students might encounter in the workplace
Examination - an externally set, externally marked examination, taken in exam conditions .
Teaching and learning approaches
Unit 1 Exploring the use of land
You will examine the factors that affect land management and food production. You will compare historical land use and management for food production through to the present day, with a greater emphasis on sustainability, environmental management and public access.
Unit 2 Application of science in the land based sector
Looking at the role of the sciences in the modern land based sector, you will explore the roles of plants/crops and animals, whilst looking at the importance of biosecurity. This unit involves practical work to monitor plant and animal health, including providing nutrition, and upholding welfare.
Unit 3 Application of technology in the land based sector
In this unit, you will develop an understanding of the way technology is applied within the land based industries, investigating the range of technologies involved. You will also consider how sciences can be used to provide a more sustainable and environmentally friendly solution to challenges in the industry.
Enrichment opportunities:
This qualification includes a range of opportunities for practical workplace experiences, and we will be working closely with local business in the sector to provide these.

The Future
The land based sector is a major employer in our region.
This qualification provides excellent preparation for both direct entry to employment and apprenticeships in the industry, and for progression to further study in this field.
Linked Post 16 qualifications include BTEC Animal Management, BTEC Travel and Tourism, A Level Geography, and A levels in Biology and Chemistry.
Vocational qualifications are available at regional agricultural colleges, and we work closely with colleges to manage progression for students onto specialist courses, such as Equine Studies, Forestry and Horticulture.
