Self Study – Homework & Revision
How to Revise – Look, cover, write & check
How to Revise - Effective Learning
Self Study
Self-study, our name for homework, reflects the importance of independent knowledge consolidation and application in preparation for Level 2 and Level 3 examinations. Instructions for self-study are set in Microsoft Teams Classes to support students and families with organisation. Click here for guidance on accessing Microsoft Teams
Virtual learning on school-approved platforms is used to support knowledge consolidation, e.g. Sparx Maths and Seneca Learning.
Students will also be expected to complete work in exercise books and workbooks.
Revision
- We proactively teach students how to revise through principles of ‘retrieve’ and ‘apply’.
- 'Retrieve' refers to retrieving knowledge from memory, e.g. through self-testing and using 'look, cover, write and check'. Retrieval practice is a powerful tool for consolidating knowledge in long-term memory.
- 'Apply' refers to applying knowledge, e.g. to practice questions and problems. Applying knowledge further strengthens it in long-term memory and makes it easier to apply flexibly in different contexts.
- Need to Know books are a critical Key Stage 4 and 5 revision resource. For example, Year 11 engage in twice-weekly ‘Need to Know’ sessions.
- Revision practices informed by EEF meta-data, e.g. paired and self-testing using mind-maps, notes or flashcards, are modelled in lessons, with the expectation that students replicate this independently.
- The exercise book is an important self-study resource, as a source of high-quality notes. Tasks may include reviewing and summarising notes, self-testing and applying knowledge to exam-style questions.
- Distributed practice is used to support students to build these skills over time.

The Exercise Book as a Learning Tool
Students will be expected to complete work in exercise books and workbooks; they may also be asked to use lesson notes and revision guides as learning tools.
