Child Development and Care

Our Child Development and Care courses provide the knowledge and understanding of the theory behind child development and well-being and the practical applications necessary for working with children in a variety of settings. We give our students the opportunity to study the different kinds of childcare settings which are available and will prepare students to work in these environments looking at issues such as dress code, time keeping, teamwork and professional responsibilities. Being on time, on side and on task allows students be regularly reminded of the type of skillset and attitude needed in a real life working environment.

Our department strives to impact the experience of student learning so that they develop into strong, confident, and independent learners at a level which enables them to achieve and exceed their expectations. A wide variety of teaching strategies are used in Child Development and Care to make lessons ambitious, fun, challenging, and informative. Individual theory, group work, role-playing and practical craft sessions, visiting speakers, using ICT, research and application to real-life case studies all help make the subject more real for the students.

Students study the individual needs of children and the importance of fairness and inclusive practice and our programmes give learners an insight into their preferred learning styles and assists in developing their ability to study independently and as part of a team. We also learn about holistic development of children from birth to five years and the factors that may impact both positively and negatively on this. Practical activities are used to develop student understanding of how routines can support a child’s development and how the range of transitions children experience can be managed effectively.

Our department offers the following qualifications in child development:

NCFE CACHE Level 2 Technical Award in Child Development and Care

NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education (EYE).
