Geography
At Berwick Academy our aim when teaching Geography is to inspire in students a curiosity about the world and its population. We aim to promote the student’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deeper understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
Our Geography curriculum is shaped by our whole school ethos of friendship, learning and respect, which sets high expectations for our students encouraging them to become the very best that they can be. We utilise whole school learning principles including the importance of knowledge recall, distributed practice and disciplinary literacy.
At Berwick Academy, the Geography curriculum is sequenced to ensure that students build upon their prior learning and are encouraged to create synoptic links to become critical and engaged learners over the course of their education.
As Geography is a topic based upon understanding of the world around us, it is important that students are able to apply their learning inside the classroom to the outside world and see both human and physical processes in action. Our curriculum incorporates school trips and fieldwork to give students first hand experiences, for example visits to Bowmont Water, Holy Island and Gateshead Quayside.
The Geography curriculum at Berwick Academy provides students not only the opportunity to achieve qualifications at both GCSE and A-level, but also provides students with the fundamental skills and a powerful lens through which to see the world, allowing them to forge a successful career and engage fully and critically in society through friendship, learning and respect.
