Latin
A relatively recent addition to the Berwick Academy curriculum, Latin offers a fantastic opportunity for the study of an ancient language and culture. Students taking Latin in Years 9 and 10 have enjoyed the opportunity to develop their skills in a language that brings wider benefits, including enhanced understanding of the etymology of many English words, especially much of the academic vocabulary encountered in the sciences. Our students also benefit from the opportunity to learn about the fascinating history and culture of the Ancient Roman civilisation.
In Year 9, we dive in to study of how Romans shaped our modern world, alongside an introduction to the vocabulary, grammar and syntax of Latin. Other highlights of study include learning about the eruption of Vesuvius and destruction of Pompeii, and about Roman society, including politics, theatre and beliefs about life after death. Development of language skills continues apace alongside cultural and historical studies.
In Year 10, we build extensively upon the language skills acquired in Year 9, developing understanding of complex grammar constructions such as the active and passive voice. As part of the GCSE course, we also study literature. Texts include Epitaph to Claudia and Cloelia, a tale about a young girl who finds herself at the centre of the fall of the Roman monarchy.
Wider enrichment is a central component of learning in Latin, and students benefit from the opportunity to attend a number of trips and activities during the course of their studies. These include working with our partner school in Latin, RGS Newcastle, and a trip to Vindolanda. These experiences are designed to further enhance students' language skills and immerse them in the history and culture of Ancient Rome.
